Fir On The Mountain: Supreme court rejects Wike’s suit against tribunal

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, dismissed the suit filed by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, challenging the jurisdiction of the Rivers governorship election petition tribunal to hear a petition by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dakuku Peterside.

In his argument, Wike had argued that the tribunal sitting in Abuja had no jurisdiction over matters that transpired in the state, contending however, that the tribunal should have sat in Rivers State and not Abuja.

However, the tribunal was moved to Abuja on the ground of security concerns, like those of Akwa I‎bom, Yobe, Adamawa and Borno.

The appeal court had earlier ruled that the tribunal could sit in Abuja to handle Rivers election petitions.

Recall also that in its ruling on Saturday, the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal, had sacked Wike as governor of the state, and ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold a fresh election within 90 days.

Following this ruling, the political temperature in the state has since risen a few bars as the ruling APC and the opposition PDP have been engaged in a war of words over the credibility of the judicial ruling.

National Leadership of the PDP, in a strong-worded statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Saturday, however asked PDP “supporters and lovers of democracy across the country to rise up and use all lawful means to resist anti-democratic forces, now using the judiciary and security agencies in their desperate scheme to subvert the will of the people and destroy the nation’s democracy.”

President Buhari moves to fill boards, agencies

President Muhammadu Buhari has empowered an eight-man panel, mostly made up of officials of All Progressives Congress, APC, on positions in Federal Government boards, parastatals and agencies.

The committee is headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, who was until recently the National Vice-Chairman, North-East of APC.

It also has national Vice-Chairmen of APC from the North-West, North-Central, South-West and South-East as members.

Lawal is to act as Chairman of the committee, which according to a statement by by Assistant Director, Press, office of the SGF, Mr. Oise Johnson, was inaugurated yesterday.

Other are Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, North-East Zone, member; Alhaji Zakari Ede, North-Central, member; Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, North-West, member;

Chief Hillard Etagbo Eta, South-South, member; Chief Pius Akinyelure, South-West, member; Chief Emmanuel Eneukwe, South-East, member, and Mr. Gideon Sammani, a Senior Special Assistant to the President, Secretary

Rivers alleys fear over re-run polls as senators split over Amaechi

Following the screening and confirmation of the remaining ministerial nominees in Abuja today, senators of All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have mapped out strategies on how to achieve their set goals.While PDP senators have allegedly resolved to frustrate the confirmation of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, their APC counterparts have vowed to ensure that Amaechi is confirmed.

The PDP senators are said to be worried that with the confirmation of Amaechi as minister, he would wield so much influence and power in the politics of his native home state, Rivers, if a re-run is to be held.

This is coming as the report of the Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions, on petitions against Amaechi, is to be considered today.

It will be recalled that the report was, last Thursday, presented during plenary but was not considered even though Amaechi was screened, where PDP senators refused to ask questions.

The Anyanwu-led committee deliberated on a petition by a Port Harcourt-based group, Integrity Group, over alleged fraud by the former governor.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has narrated how God used  Ayo Fayose the Governor of Ekiti state to confirm him as speaker of the house. 100 People Contracted Deadly Disease After Eating At Same Restaurant

Reports says that more than 80 people contracted a bacterial infection that put 12 in intensive care after dining at a northern California Mexican seafood restaurant over the weekend.

Mariscos San Juan in downtown San Jose was closed after dozens of their customers came down with the 'very infectious' Shigella bacteria, which causes severe fever, diarrhea and stomach pain, according to public health officials.

The bacteria is spread by people who do not wash their hands after using the bathroom, according to Santa Clara County health officer Dr. Sara Cody.  

Health officials believe a contaminated food handler spread the disease and now worry that 100 more people could become infected this week, according to the San Jose Mercury News. 

'It doesn't take very much for this bacteria to spread,' Cody said. 

Shigella is treatable with antibiotics. It can be fatal in rare cases, but all persons infected over the weekend are expected to recover. No children were among the ill.

Cody said some of the 80 people who had become sick represented a 'small wave of secondary infections', meaning they were most likely infected by someone who had dined at Mariscos.

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department was notified of the outbreak after a local hospital received five cases on Saturday. 

Mariscos San Juan has since had its license suspended and will remain closed until 'the safety of the public can be assured', county officials said. 

Calls to the restaurant by The Associated Press rang unanswered Tuesday. 

Inspectors found nothing suspicious with the two additional Mariscos San Juan restaurants in San Jose and they remain open.

Yakubu takes over from Amina Zakari who has been working as INEC Chairman in acting capacity since Attahiru Jega left office in June. She was appointed INEC commissioner for the North-East.

Singer Eedris Abdulkareem Blames Buhari Of Fela Kuti's Death

Eedris has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari of killing Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

The legendary Afrobeat singer was arrested many times under the various regimes. Fela Kuti was sentenced to five years in prison by the military tribunal for currency charges when Major-General Muhammadu Buhari took power after a coup in December 1983. The singer spent over a year in jail. He only regained his freedom when Buhari’s successor, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida granted him pardon two years later.

Seun Kuti, one of Fela’s children, showed his dissatisfaction when Buhari was back as a civilian president, and he was cited to have directed this comment to the incumbent president: “For you to jail that man you must be inherently evil.”

But Fela’s son is not the only one expressing his anger.

On October 16, at the current #Felabration2015, Abdulkareem took his rage to a new level by accusing Buhari of killing Fela Kuti in 1976.

Sprint Runner Oscar Pistorius released from prison, under house arrest

Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius was released from prison in South Africa Monday and placed under house arrest, Correctional Services spokesman Manelisi Wolela said.

The former Olympic athlete had been in prison since October last year, when a judge sentenced him to five years for culpable homicide in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. He said he mistook her for an intruder. Last week a South African parole board said it had approved his placement under house arrest and correctional supervision for four years.

Alleged Terrorist Bomb Kills At Least 86 Persons, Leaving 186 severely injured

Two explosions have ripped through a pro-Kurdish peace rally in the Turkish capital of Ankara, leaving at least 86 people dead and over 186 injured.

Witnesses described how the blast shook the ground at the road junction near the main train station in the centre of the Turkish capital Ankara, leaving body parts and debris all over the road. 

Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu confirmed that 62 people were killed in the blast and a further 24 people have since died in hospital.

Three days of mourning have been announced as the country grieved following one of the worst terror attacks in Europe.

Emergency services have been struggling to deal with the sheer number of wounded people in the aftermath of the blast. 

The flags and banners which were being used to promote Kurdish rights in the demonstration were turned into makeshift stretchers by protesters tending to the injured.  

Although the attack has not been claimed by any terror group, the Turkish government suspects that the twin blasts was a 'terrorist' attack, an official said.

'We suspect that there is a terrorist connection,' a government official told AFP, asking not to be named.

Activists on the ground have confirmed that ball bearings and other pieces of deadly shrapnel may have been packed inside the device and were found at the scene.  See more photos after the cut...

Dr. Kalu while addressing pressmen said blood samples have been sent to the Ebola Diagnosing Centre in Benin City, Edo State. Dr. Kalu stated that those quarantined are principally nurses who attended to the patient and those who came in contact with him before his death. National Centre for Disease Control, Federal Ministry of Health, The Cross River State Government, Calabar Municipality, and the Department of State Security Services, DSS” have been alerted of the recent development.

The United Kingdom-based Chevening Scholarship has removed the name of ex-Minister of Petroleum from its list of female achievers. They send a strong signal that corruption can't be celebrated.

Chevening is an international scholarship scheme which enables students with leadership qualities from 144 countries and territories to undertake postgraduate study or courses in universities in the UK.

According to Sahara Reporters, after receiving a Chevening scholarship in 2002, Diezani attended Cambridge University for her MBA and then returned to Nigeria where she became the first female Executive Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company.

After emerging as the first woman to hold the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria and the first female President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Chevening on its website, listed her as one of its best female alumni in commemoration of the March 8 International Women’s Day.

Diezani was listed among other international and accomplished women.

However, following Diezani’s arrest by the UK’s National Crime Agency along with five other people on allegation of bribery and corruption offences, Chevening delisted her name from its website but retained the names of its other "celebrated women' without any corruption case.

To Be The Minister Of Petroleum, Buhari Must Submit Himself For Screening — SENATE

After unveiling the ministerial list sent to senate by President Muhammadu Buhari during plenary, many PDP senators are talking tough, insisting that the President must submit himself before them for screening if he is going to be the Minister of Petroleum.

They are also bragging that they will reject the list of 21 ministerial nominees sent by the President, saying the constitution provides for a nominee from each state of the federation and that any list that did not cover the 36 states would suffer serious opposition on the floor of the Senate.

The PDP Senators have also vowed that

they would not be cowed by the trial of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal just as they promised to adopt stringent measures in line with the provisions of the Constitution during the screening of ministerial nominees.

Sources say their major target is the DG of Buhari's Campaign, ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi, for daring to join the APC, leading to the defeat of the PDP during the 2015 presidential election.

Don't forget that  the Senate President  Bukola Saraki, is standing trial for corruption. How can you fight a man who is not standing trial anywhere for corruption when the head of the Senate is standing trial? Lol!
